The highlight of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater—the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed two to three million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed, the crater is approximately 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and spans 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). The original volcano is estimated to have reached heights between 4,500 and 5,800 meters (14,800 to 19,000 feet), while the crater floor now sits at an elevation of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level.

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up for the drive to Tarangire National Park, a journey of approximately two and a half hours along well-maintained roads. Named after the Tarangire River, the park becomes a vital water source during the dry season, attracting a vast array of wildlife.

Tarangire is famous for its massive elephant herds and towering baobab trees, some estimated to be over a thousand years old. During your game drive, you’ll have the chance to spot giraffes, hartebeests, bushbucks, and possibly predators such as lions and leopards. The park is also a paradise for bird lovers, home to more breeding bird species than any other destination on Earth.
